About Todd Clark
Where junk can lead you
|
As a child, I loved to find things and take them apart. On bulk trash day, I would scour the piles of discarded household objects for anything that contained interesting parts. I'd take these items home where I would dissect them, looking for motors, gears, and circuit boards. These parts would be made into anything from the control panels for space ships to a base for my action figures.
It's not surprising this obsession with found objects has influenced my art.
Now I use everyday objects to challenge preconceived notions of how an object is used by taking them out of their normal context.
With my bullet line of jewelry, the viewer is drawn in by the form's beauty but then taken aback because it's made of something that is not generally considered beautiful. By making bullets it into an art object they can be viewed thoughtfully.
"On the Level" is a series of silver jewelry pieces made with carpenter’s levels. Again, by taking the level out of it's normal context, it transforms it into an interesting and captivating object. People are intrigued by the color of the level thinking it is some kind of stone and then surprised when they see what it really is. |
